Custom vs. Traditional AGV Buying

When it comes to automatic guided vehicle (AGV) buying, there are many companies to choose from. Depending on your needs, a traditional company that sells specific predetermined models may be best or a company that specializes in custom builds might be ideal. If you are in the beginning stages of the AGV buying process and not sure which type of company is best suited for you, this article is here to help.

Traditional AGV Manufacturers

The majority of AGV companies out there fall into the ‘Traditional AGV Manufacturers’ category. They offer a selection of standard vehicles, and the customer chooses which vehicle best fits their criteria. For instance, if a company is looking to transport pallets that weigh a total of 12,500 pounds and the manufacturer offers vehicle options of 6,000 lbs., 12,000 lbs. and 18,000 lbs., then the company would need to upgrade to the 18,000 lbs. option because the 12,000 lbs. would not quite get the job done. These companies offer AGVs with set specifications and you fit your needs into one for the preestablished vehicle categories. If your automation needs are standard and do not require any special accommodations, then a traditional AGV manufacturer may be a good fit.

Besides trying to fit into predetermined categories, another downside to standard manufacturers is that they usually use a single source for spare parts. This means when a part on the AGV needs to be replaced, there is only one option of who to buy from.

Custom AGV Manufacturers

On the other end of the gamut, are Custom AGV Manufacturers that allow you the freedom to create any vehicle you can imagine. Custom AGV manufacturers in the material handling world are similar to Orange County Choppers in the motorcycle world. If you can dream it, we can build it.

If your operation requires a unique solution, chances are a ‘Custom AGV Manufacturer’ will be the best fit. For instance, if the load you are carrying throughout your facility is oddly shaped (ex: large rolls of paper), a traditional forklift most likely won’t get the job done. Instead, swapping the fork attachment for a clamp attachment would ensure the load is safely and securely carried across the facility. The possibilities are endless. Extra safety sensors, red running lights, quad travel capability, super charge battery…and so on. The great thing about Custom AGV Manufacturers is that whatever the problem may be, a unique solution can be custom built just for you.

At America in Motion, we specialize in custom AGV building but also have standard vehicle options to choose from, giving our client’s the best of both worlds.
